My first attempt at writing a children’s picture book was influenced by my experiences from traveling to an orphanage in a third world country and then traveling back home to the over abundance that is available to us in the US.  My view on needs versus wants certainly changes after that experience however I found it sad how fast you can fall back to the old habits of turning your wants into needs.  I was looking for a way to remind mostly myself and my children how keeping your needs in check and how giving to others can be so much more meaningful than receiving.  That is where the idea for the series One Kindness at a Time was born.

The Blue Pencil:  A little boy blessed with so much, learns of a little girl who has so little and devises a plan to help her.  In this endearing, 400-word, children’s picture book, written in rhyme, the reader gets to rhythmically and visually follow Johnny to school with his backpack full of supplies and Zoya to school with her hands empty, with not even a pencil.  At school Johnny learns about Zoya and her classmates and comes up with a plan to help.  When Johnny decides to send her his favorite blue pencil from his grandma your heart will melt.  Every reader big and small have their heart warmed and will learn the value of passing on kindness no matter how small.

The Blue Pencil is the first in the series, One Kindness at a Time, where a character that received an act of kindness in the previous book passes on a kindness to someone new.  This series will watch an act of kindness pass throughout the world.

This book is geared toward 3 to 8 year olds, with a message for all.
